It was the first day of Mumbai cricket’s monsoon dhamaka – the Dr. HD Kanga League. The excitement in the air was palpable as young talents, established players and veterans took the field with all the enthusiasm. It was an extra special day for left arm pace bowler Rahil Shaikh of Young Mohamedan. The ‘B’ division match between Young Mohemadan and Muslim United at Azad maidan was the first game in an official cricket tournament for the 22 year old Rahil. It turned out to be a dream debut. Bowling with the new ball, Rahil took a wicket with his second delivery in an official game and capped it with a five wicket haul. “I had only played tennis ball cricket till four months ago, I had never played in an official leather ball tournament, said Rahil. He also said, “I had heard about Kanga League and knew it was played in the rains. But there was a thick layer of grass around the run up and then before the game it also started raining. I kept on wondering how anyone could bowl here. But it proved to be a great experience and I enjoyed the game.” Rahil was fortunate to get a break immediately as his talent was noticed by the experts at the Cricket Star Series. The six foot, four inch pacer generates good speed and was clocked at 142kmph at the competition. After his fathers demise three years ago, Rahil had to take up the job of a supervisor at the cleaning drive being carried out at the Mithi River. Fortunately, his uncles came to his rescue and realized his cricketing potential allowing him to focus on his cricket.Cricket Star Selector Kapil Dev was also impressed with Rahil’s pace at the cricket Star Series and told him, “Mujhe ek saal mein Ranji khel ke dikhao.”
