Master Class Session 3

Sandeep Patil’s day in the sun!
The weather was swelteringly hot, but Sandeep Patil’s mind did not waver from his job. Sandeep played three specific roles during his day with the contestants at the Cricket Star Academy and, at the end of the sessions, the boys were in awe. First, the boys got some thought-provoking input from the man who successfully coached the Kenyan team to the semi-finals of the World Cup. He said that once the players crossed the boundary ropes they were on their own. He emphasised personal makeover—each should be responsible for their own role, their performance and the responsibility towards the team. Patil discussed a few objectives, a manifesto really, that each of the boys could imbibe before stepping onto the field. This was aimed at helping the boys enter the field with confidence and a sense of purpose every single time. The objectives aimed at positive self-talk, knowing one’s strengths and constantly looking to aim higher. |
Then the boys asked questions and sought Sandeep’s advice. Patil, on his part, took a little time to get to know the boys and understand their mindset.
The session soon moved onto the pitch, where the boys were tested in playing the sweep, both fine and off the wicket. Such was Sandeep Patil’s sharpness that he noticed the boys had failed to locate their off stump even before playing the first ball. S Dinesh got a lot of praise because he repeatedly negotiated the ball successfully towards the directed areas. Chandrakant was a close second. However, Dinesh proved to be the outstanding player of the day, getting it right eight out of eight times.
There was much to be learnt and Sandeep left the boys with many important tips that would help them improve their game if they applied them.
